Waymo happens to be the second car renting company to test their self-driven product on the roads of Arizona in the US. Last year, Google joined hands with Waymo to share their self-driven technology with the company instead of developing their own. Waymo already has more than 100 minivans running on the roads of Phoenix and Mountain View, California. Waymo has extended their services to some parts of Arizona and their neighboring towns like Gilbert, Tempe, and Chandler. Waymo explained the procedure to be very simple wherein the user would simply login into their website and select the kind of ride he wants.
Waymo would then select the rider based on the type of trip selected by the user and the primary mode of transportation to be selected should be Self- Driving. Although, a test driver would always accompany to avoid any unforeseen event but it the company would ensure that the car is self-driven during the complete journey. With their successful completion in some part of California in last one year, Waymo has already ordered their car making partner Fiat Chrysler produce more 500 minivans. John Krafcik, CEO of Waymo, said that he expect to extend the services to all the states across the US as soon as possible.
Uber earlier tried to experiment this technology installed in their car Pittsburgh and Arizona last September but failed miserably after their car met with an accident in Arizona. Waymo has also blamed Uber for stealing their self-driven car technology. To which Uber claimed that the technology of Waymo is far better and advanced compared to theirs. Arizona has been the target location because Waymo doesn’t need to hand over any paperwork or documentation and doesn’t require obtaining any license to start this facility of the Self-driven car. The rules and regulations of the department of transportation are milder compared to other states in the US.
Governor Doug Ducey welcomed Uber and Waymo with open arms and has been very proud to be contributing to the technological advancement of the nation. Although Uber has vanished from the city of Arizona after their controversial accident case, but this new entry of Waymo would try to enhance the option of public transportation facilities and experiences of the audience of Arizona. Waymo would provide limited services to a limited audience in the beginning in order to get a proper feedback about the experience and the technology installed in these minivans. Only approved riders would be allowed to book the minivan and obtain the services through login in through the Waymo app.
