Vessels hitting Whales is a common but serious issue happening in those areas of the US where water transport is used heavily. The scientists have explored many incidents where the humpback whale population is decreasing due to many collisions happening in the Southern part of Maine and some part of Massachusetts. Many Whales were found in an injured situation during the spring season where they travel to New England for feeding purpose. The Marine Mammal Science journal explained the increase in the number of collisions causing a threat to both Whale species and boats. Efforts are made to find out solutions to avoid these accidents.
According to a report published in 2014, nearly 171 blue whales are in PLOS ONE in the areas of eastern Northern Pacific. The report also highlighted that if there are modifications and alterations done to the shipping lanes then the probability of collision would reduce to a great extent. According to a report published in a journal of Marine Biology, 25 out of 108 accidents that happened in Alaska area resulted in a death of the mammal. There has been constant request and applications submitted to the marine managers to develop a strategy or a device through which they can avoid the collision and decrease the number of accidents.
It is evident that Blue whales have a very sensational power through which they can detect a ship coming towards them and end up in severe injuries due to accidents and many ties into death due to a collision in sensitive body parts. They are very slow swimmers and are floating in those areas which are colder to the surface. The reports submitted about the accidents do not include those accidents wherein the mammal is getting killed. Now it is also published that the mammal doesn’t have a single collision but multiple ones.
A study was conducted between 2004to 2013 which reported more than 624 whales been injured due to collision with the vessels. Out of these 624 injured whales, nearly 14.7 percent whales have met with single accidents and rest of them have encountered more than one accidents. When the collision happens with the big ships, then the whales are the major sufferers. But when the collisions happen with the small ships, then the probability of the travelers being killed or injured is much higher.
The Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) which work for the protecting of whales and dolphins have submitted reports and findings through which the regulators can work upon managing the traffic in these water bodies and try to save the endangered species.
