Monday morning, the social media site was flooded with a video in which a passenger was ill-treated by the United airlines security guards. During the boarding of the United flight at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, headed to Louisville, a passenger was forced to leave the flight and catch the next flight since the flight was over-boarded. The incident consisted of verbal and physical actions by the United airlines security guards forcing and pulling an Asian passenger by his collar, bleeding from mouth dragged forcefully to get down from the airlines.
The video caught a lot of attention from the audience and there was outrage condemning the act to be inhuman. Everyone has their own story to explain the incident. According to the airline’s officials, all the passengers were informed at the gate about the situation on the airplane. United airlines asked for volunteers who could give up their current flight ticket and board the next flight. The volunteers were offered proper compensation; however, no one volunteered.
According to one of the fellow passengers, there is a different side to this story. The passenger said that United management people along with the security guards came on to the flight and randomly picked up four people and asked them to vacant their seats and board the next flight. When passengers agitated against their decision, security guards started abusing and ill-treating the passenger. After the incident, the passenger was able to board the flight but his physical conditions were completely distorted. During the two hours when this whole incident happened, there was no update provided by the United Airlines about the takeoff. One of the security officers who was involved in this incident has been on leave since then.
The Chicago Department of Aviation said that the protocol wasn’t followed by the United airlines officials and didn’t meet up to the expectations n accordance with the standard operation procedure laid down by the department. United Chief Executive Officer Oscar Munoz supported the airline’s staff by stating that the staff members have followed the proper protocol and procedure. He openly supported his employees and stated that he would always back his employees.
The US Department of Transportation (DoT) informed that they are reviewing the policies and procedures set by the United Airlines for asking passengers to vacant their seat voluntarily and in case of denial by the passenger what are the extremes steps the airlines could take to vacant the seat. The US DoT said that the airlines need to keep a track of the flights been over boarded for higher cost and have proper protocol in favor of both the passengers and the airline in case if there are no volunteers to give up their seat.
